In the City

This guest post from Hong Alexander

I started watching Sex In the City when I was in middle school. I know what you’re thinking, that explains a lot of the behaviors you exhibited in middle school, high school and college. One could say I grew up a little too fast and knew too much for my own good. I am now 25, single, and living in a city. From time to time I catch reruns of Sex In the City on Directv and I’m coming to realize that the show has taken on a completely new meaning. It’s not just about the promiscuous women whose stories of dating are shocking, at times vulgar, and always entertaining. I now see the show as millions of women saw it when it originally aired, as a story of independence and the love between friends. Every show is perfectly themed and narrated, and I am getting to the age where it’s all so familiar. I see a little of each character in myself, and their shortcomings make mine more bearable. I think that around Thanksgiving or Christmas I’d like to have a little marathon and revisit the episodes from the beginning. If I get really inspired, maybe I’ll take a trip to New York and find my Mr. Big.
